CTCD connections with ESA Earth Explorer Mission
The European Space Agency recently announced its shortlist of six new mission proposals, from which
one will be selected for launch as the fourth Earth Explorer Core mission during the first
half of the next decade. Top of the shortlist is the BIOMASS mission, led by Dr Thuy Le Toan of CESBIO
and Shaun Quegan, Director of CTCD. This mission aims to provide global measurements of forest biomass using
spaceborne synthetic aperture radar. For further information click here.
CTCD is also involved (via members of staff at UCL) in the FLEX (FLuorescence EXplorer) mission, which aims to observe global photosynthesis through the measurement of fluorescence .
Carbon Fusion meeting, Edinburgh
This international meeting was hosted by CTCD in May 2006. The Carbon Fusion project's main objective is
to determine how data assimilation can generate improved insights into the processes
underlying the terrestrial C cycle, and thence enhance our prognostic capabilities.

GEM Software and Training Courses
GEM-SA is the first stage of the
GEM project to develop software for quantifying and analysing the
uncertainty in the outputs of complex models. The software is freely
available for non-commercial use. A course entitled "Uncertainty in
Environmental Process Models" was given twice in March 2005, to
train environmental scientists in the use of GEM-SA. We intend to
give this course again, depending on demand (and not necessarily to
restrict it to environmental models). Anyone who might wish to
attend such a course should register their interest with Mari Bullock on
